Need those last minute gifts for the teachers, mail carriers, colleagues at the office that promised we "weren't doing gift this year.." (grrrr....I'm looking at you Amanda!)? Instead of scratch tickets, one of the generic gift sets from the store or a bottle of wine, show them your crafty side and that you truly care about them with a personalized "Cookie in a Jar" gift. You can customize the top for any person, profession or season to make it even more special. Today (and in the included file) is a "Smart Cookie" design for your kids teachers! #xToolChristmasgift
Gather all your supplied BEFORE you start the project:
Pint Sized (16oz) Mason Jars
Holiday Fabric & Ribbon
Basswood
3/4 Cup All Purpose Flour
1/2 Teaspoon Baking Powder
1/2 Teaspoon Baking Soda
1/8 Teaspoon Salt
1/2 Cup Old Fashioned Oats
1/3 Cups M&Ms
1/4 Cup Brown Sugar
1/4 Cup White Sugar
Upload the provided files into xTool Creative Suites.
I use the 3mm Basswood on Triangluar Prism Settings.
If you want to change the design of the lid top, you can ungroup the design and add your own engraving layer for the round top.
Since I like to use every small piece of space on a plank of wood, by using the "Frame" feature, you can see where the laser will be cutting and engraving.
Once the framing is complete, you can engrave and cut.
Assembling the ingredients in the jar needs to be done in order to create a fun layered effect.
I used a regular piece of paper, but you can use a piece of wax or parchment paper and a small piece of scotch tape to make a wide mouthed "funnel" to help get everything INTO the jar instead of on the counter ;)
Using a measuring cup/spoons, measure each ingredient and add into the mason jar in this order:
3/4 Cup All Purpose Flour
1/2 Teaspoon Baking Powder
1/2 Teaspoon Baking Soda
1/8 Teaspoon Salt
1/2 Cup Old Fashioned Oats
1/3 Cups M&Ms
(You can substitute other fun mix-ins such as: Chocolate Chips, White Chocolate Chips, Butterscotch Chips, Peanut Butter
Chips, Crushed Candy Candys, Nuts, etc. to make other great flavors)
1/4 Cup Brown Sugar
1/4 Cup White Sugar
You will need to tap the jar onto the counter and push the ingredients down to make them compact and fit into the jar.
Now that the ingredients are in the jar:
Cut a 6" square piece of fabric and 6" piece of ribbon
Cookie jars aren't just good for Christmas, you can also use them year round and have any fun seasonal fabrics and ribbons to make them fun!
Place the metal lid back onto the jar.
Tie the ribbon into the hole of the tag you cut earlier.
Use a small piece of tape to tape the ribboned tag to the lid so the tag dangles over the edge.
Put the piece of fabric on top of lid.
Place your wooden cut lid on top of the fabric.
Screw the Mason Jar lid on to the jar.
You are now ready to give this heartfelt and handmade gift!
The tag gives all the ingredients and instructions for the recipient to mix and bake the cookies.
Empty jar of mix into a bowl. Add 1/4 cup butter or margarine, melted, 1 beaten egg and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla.
Mix until blended. Roll into 1-inch balls. Bake at 375 degrees about 12 to 14 minutes.
