Sharing the process of making a design in XCS and using the "Smart fill" feature to quickly lay out multiple copies for quick and easy making. Using a Christmas ornament as our inspiration for some holiday earrings that make a great gift or sale item.
Make a circle that is round, you can force the circle to be round by hold the shift key while creating it.
You find this shape from the "Insert" menu on the left.
Create a rectangle and center it on top of the circle.
You find this shape from the "Insert" menu on the left.
Draw 3 oval shapes, there are one of the many useful shapes you can insert from the "Shape" menu on the left.
Align them so there in one in the center and the other 2 touch in the center of the middle, as seen in picture above.
Select the 3 ovals and use the "Combine" and "Unite" tool to weld them together.
Draw another rectangle and align it to the edge of the left side of the welded shape and use "Combine" and "Subtract" to trim the left side.
Repeat this step on the right side to trim the right side.
Your final ornament top object will look like the picture above.
Draw an oval the same with as the ornament top, make a copy of the oval using "copy" and "paste" and position it so it aligns with the top of the ornament top.
Use "Combine" and "Unite" to round the top of the ornament top.
Move the 2nd copy of the oval back to top and align with the rounded curve of the ornament top.
Complete the ornament top by using "Combine" and "Subtract at overlap"
Make a copy of the ornament top "copy and paste" and move the copy to the side.
Select the the larger ornament circle and the top and use "Combine" and "Unite" to weld the ornament.
Move the copied top back to the top of the ornament.
To add a hoop or place to attach the earring hardware to the earring, draw a circle about the width of the top of the ornament.
Make a slightly smaller circle to fit inside, align it to the center of the outer circle.
Select both and "Combine" and "Subtract at overlap".
Move the ring to the top of the larger ornament and move so the inner bottom of the ring is touching the top of the ornament top.
"Combine" and "Unite" to attach the ring.
Set the settings for cut and score for the design (see the settings above for what I used for the wood tags).
Add the multiple tags or blanks to your work area, give a little space around the blanks for best results so that the software can identify there are multiple objects (see picture above as a guide).
Size and position your design on one of the blanks
When your design is positioned as desired on one of the blanks, use "Smart fill" to automatically copy and position your design on all the blanks.
Process your job and all of the earrings will be cut and scored perfectly.
Decorate and assemble your earrings.
I used a gold acrylic paint to decorate the top of the ornament, I applied with a small brush.
I used a leather dye that I dilute with alcohol for the colors of the ornaments.
Earring hardware can be purchased at Hobby Lobby, Michaels or JOANN in the US or other jewelry supply stores in your area (or online).
I have included a video that may be helpful to see all the steps in action.
