Information
Living far away from family can be tough. I made this sign for my mother in law, who lives in another state, with all her kids and grand babies. She absolutely loved it.
Things I would do differently:
- More contrast: I would either paint the background or paint the border a more contrasting color.
-Color fill the engravings on the states. Also for more contrast.

Step1: Back Board cutout with engravings
Preview

*Other states can be found on designfind.

The background has engraving to allow for easy alignment during assembly. I chose to leave the footprints as an engraving on the back board but you could easily glue the feet here just like the rest of the cutouts from step 2.

  • Make sure to blow out all the dust from the engravings before assembly.
  • If you're going to paint the back board, do so now.

Step2: Cutouts

There are multiple approaches you could take for this step. i'll provide two options to make it easier on you.

Option ONE (easiest): *you need aluminum foil tape

  1. Select the boarder and flip horizontally. (If you don't, it may not fit in the engravings on the back board)
  2. Apply aluminum foil tape to the back border of the plywood. Make sure to tape all area where the border will be cut from. No need to tape where the states will be cut from.
  3. laser it! The laser wont cut through the tape.

Option TWO:

Laser it. Small pieces will fall though honeycomb panel and you will have to glue each piece on individually during assembly.

Step3: Assembly

If you chose option one with aluminum foil tape:

  1. Put heart and states off to the side.
  2. Leave the border attached to the tape and remove all extra materials.
  3. test fit: flip the border over and make sure it fits in back board border engravings
  4. Glue states, heart and border in place with tape still attached, then remove tape when glue has fully set.
  • Paint filling the engravings on the states will look better. I recommend doing this before gluing.
  • I use acrylic paint markers, which i find easier than using paint and paint brush. This can be done either before or after gluing.

5. Apply clear finish of your choosing.

If you chose option two:

  1. Same as above except you will need to glue each piece individually which is tedious and time consuming
