Step1: Process your Shapes

“Mom” Tattoo Style Hanging Sign instruction: step 1 - Process your Shapes

My settings are just recommendations. I technically used 3.17 mm (1/8th in) wood. Please be sure to use what settings work best for your materials and your machine. Running a test grid is always a safe bet.

Process your shapes. The purple scored layer on the back layer piece is optional. It’s only included to help guide you when aligning your pieces in later steps.

Note: If you’d like to increase/decrease the size of this design, make sure you increase/decrease all the pieces/layers. If you do not increase/decrease the entire design, the shapes will not align properly, and you will not get the end result you most likely seek.

Step2: Paint/Stain

Once your shapes have been processed & are clean. You’re ready to paint/stain.

You can get creative with this step! Use whatever colors and methods of applying color are your favorite. Pieces are even big enough for kiddos to assist in coloring for mom. If kids are assisting in painting, use kid safe paint, and make sure adults are supervising.

I spray painted the leaf pieces green & the rose piece red. I went over the engraving with a black, Posca, brush tip paint marker. I finished my back-layer piece with a “Red Oak” wood stain.

Note: make sure whatever method of color application you choose is suitable for where you are choosing to display your finished project. Example: use outdoor paint for outdoor projects

Tip: if you’d want your paint colors to appear brighter, apply a white spray paint base coat.

Follow the directions on your chosen paint/stain method & allow to dry completely.

Step3: Assemble

Once your pieces are completely dry, you’re ready to begin assembling.

These are just suggestions for assembling, if you’d prefer to work at a faster or slower pace, that’s your call.

Glue & clamp your rose piece, leaf pieces, and letter pieces to your back layer piece.

Note: make sure whatever adhesive you choose is suitable for where you are choosing to display your finished project. Example: use waterproof adhesive for outdoor projects

Follow the instructions on your adhesive of choice. Allow to dry completely.

Once your layers are completely set & dry…you are ready to give it to mom, or just hang it up! Add some funky, Whimsy, tattoo vibes, to your Mother’s Day or any day.

The holes in the background layer are big enough for all kinds of different hanging methods. I just used some twine, but use whatever you prefer and whatever will work best for where you want to display your finished project.

Hope you enjoyed creating this project! Check out my other projects for more Whimsy fun, and check out my bio to find more of my completed projects.
