Information

This Easter craft combines laser-cut wood and macrame to create a charming bunny-eared egg sign. Using 3mm Radiata Pine plywood and my xTool P2, I cut an egg-shaped design with built-in voids for macrame detailing. The ears are formed using square knots with 3–5mm macrame cord, and a simple cord pom pom creates the fluffy tail. The result is a sweet, textural Easter decoration that blends natural materials and handmade charm — perfect for seasonal displays or as unique gift tags.

Instruction

1

Step1: Prepare Your Plywood

Start with your plywood. I use the Radiata Pine-faced plywood from Bunnings — the full 2440x1220mm sheet is just $39.95, and I get it cut down to 12 x 400x600mm sheets, which fit perfectly in my xTool P2.

This plywood is affordable and ideal for prototyping, but it can contain a plastic tarp-like thread between the veneer layers. These threads don't cut cleanly, so you may need to lightly sand any rough edges after cutting.

The included file is designed to suit 3–5mm macrame cord. In the project cover photo, you'll see two examples — one with pink 5mm cord and one with brown 3mm cord.

If you’d like to resize the egg (for example, to turn it into Easter gift tags), or adjust the voids for a different macrame cord thickness, follow these steps:

Resize the Egg:
Scale the entire egg image to your desired size — 70mm tall works well for gift tags.

Check the Void Size (Red Arches):
Ungroup the egg file. Use a rectangle to measure the thickness of the red arch (the macrame void).

Example: After resizing to 70mm tall, the arch may now be ~3.2mm thick.

This is fine for 2mm cord, but for 3mm cord, you'll want to thicken it.

Thicken the Arch (if needed):
Select the red arch and use the Outline tool.

A 0.5mm outline will add 0.5mm to the outside.

Re-measure to ensure the final void is at least 1mm thicker than your cord.

Clean Up:
Delete the original inner arch and the measuring rectangle.

Adjust the Bar Thickness (between the arch and egg edge):
To reduce the risk of snapping the wood when tying knots, move the red arch down slightly.
Aim to make this bar about the same thickness as the arch void.

Check the Pom Pom Tail Void:
This small hole is where you’ll thread the tie from your cord pom pom through.
If you’ve resized the egg, double-check this void isn’t now too large.

It only needs to be just big enough for one piece of cord to pass through and tie a knot.

If it’s too large, it might show behind the finished pom pom.

Step3: Step 3: Cut the Egg Shape

Once your file is adjusted, you’re ready to cut!

Cut the egg out using the settings that best suit your wood.

Use the following settings for Radiata Pine-faced 3mm plywood from Bunnings sold as “Ecoply Pine Plywood”:

Power: 55

Speed: 10

These settings help cut through even the tricky plastic thread layers inside the plywood. Once cut, lightly sand the edges for a clean finish.

Step4: Add the Macrame Ears

Please note there are many many youtube videos that show how to make these type of macrame bunny ears, if you prefer written instructions you can follow these steps.

For the pink 5mm macrame version, you'll need:

4 lengths of macrame cord, each 240cm long.

If you are using thinner cord you will won't need as much cord, for example for the 3mm brown macrame ears I used 220cm lengths of cord.

This gives you two ears with a solid, textured look

You’ll use square knots (also called a sinnet) to form each ear, and lark’s head knots to attach them to the egg.

🐇 Creating the First Ear:

Prep the First Cord
Take one 240cm cord. Measure 90cm from one end and fold the cord at that point.
Use this fold to make a lark’s head knot through one side of the arch void.

The shorter side (90cm) should be toward the center of the egg — this will be the inner core of your knots.

The longer side is what you’ll use to knot around it.

Repeat for the Second Cord
Do the same with a second cord — again, ensuring the shorter end is facing the center of the egg.

Slide Both Knots to One Side of Center
You’ll build two separate ears, so shift these two cords to one half of the arch (we’ll do the other side next).

Begin the Square Knot Sinnet
Use the two outer (longer) cords to tie square knots around the two inner (shorter) cords.

Keep knotting until your knotted section is the desired length for your ear.

For the 5mm pink cord example, I created a 20cm length of square knots.

Shape the Ear & Attach It
Gently bend the knotted section to form an ear shape (avoid twisting the cords).

Using the four cords from this ear, attach each one to the outer bar of the arch with a lark’s head knot.

Cover the Remaining Bar
Take the last cord (lowest on the arch) and use it to make continuous lark’s head knots along the rest of the bar (toward the bottom of the egg). This gives a clean, finished look.

Finish & Hide the Ends
Once you reach the bottom:

Use a large eye needle to weave the tail ends into the back of your knotwork.

Snip the cord close to the knots.

Dab a little PVA glue onto the end and tuck it under the nearest knot with the needle.
This secures the ends invisibly for a tidy, professional finish.

🐇 Now Repeat for the Second Ear:

Repeat the above steps on the opposite side of the arch void to complete your bunny's second ear!

Step5: Make the Pom Pom Tail

Use scrap cord to make a cute pom pom:

Cut several 5cm lengths of cord.

Tie them together tightly in the middle.

Thread one side of the tie through the pom pom tail void and double knot it at the back to secure.
