After his whirlwind world tour delivering presents, Santa kicks back, cracks open an ice cold beverage, and watches his bobber float off into the tropical sunset. This is a simple trivet with an engraved image and four cork fishing flies to keep hot surfaces off the engraving.
Sand the board if necessary (the board I purchased was rough and required sanding with 220 grit paper) and apply a thin even coat of baking soda water mixture (1:10 ratio baking soda to water, stir well). Allow to dry overnight.
Open the Dec26_Graphic.xcs file in xTools Creative Studio. The bitmap image is approximately 140mm x 125mm, but may be resized if you wish to scale the project. Set the origin for processing to center, align the board to be square with the cutting axis, and center the laser crosshairs with the center of the board. Start the engraving process. Lightly sand with 400 grit sandpaper and wipe off residue.
Open the Dec26_Flies.xcs file in xTools Creative Studio. Cut a work piece from the cork sheet approximately 120mm x 120mm (or large enough to fit all four flies if you have resized the project). Ensure that the cork sheet is flat, securing corners if necessary. Set the origin for processing to center, align the cork piece to be square with the cutting axis, and center the laser crosshairs with the center of the cork piece. Start the cutting process.
Orient the cork fishing flies on the engraved trivet board to your liking, then apply glue to the back of each and press firmly onto the board. Allow glue to dry.
If desired, apply oil or other finish to the board. I used mineral oil. Apply a thin coat of mineral oil to the board using a foam brush, and use a fine brush to get around the edges of the flies. Wipe remaining oil off, and allow the oil to cure.
