I wanted to combine two of my hobbies to give gifts this year. Creating these gift boxes was quite a journey. I used Tarot to come up with a word for the person I was working on the item for. From there, I created a handwritten note on how they could incorporate that word into their life in the next year. I painted the basswood black to make it pop. Then I hand stamped the word onto the token and attached the necklace. I've made 6 of these (5 for my nieces and nephews and 1 for a friend). They have all adored them.
Select the design file. This is created using https://www.festi.info/boxes.py and is a 2wx2dx2h inch box. I used 3mm basswood so I set the website for that. Note that the pieces in the design file that have the name on them are the sides of the top piece. The top piece is the on that says What's Your Word? The sides are the pieces with the the word on them (Harmony) and also feature 3 cutouts that the base will slide into. Adjust the size of the fonts so the text fits inside the red borders.
I chose to use the Tarot to come up with the word. I focused on the individual and what phrase could be useful to them in the coming year. I chose the card and picked the word that came to me.
I hand wrote a little inspiration for them to use the word in their everyday life. This of course is optional.
Change the text from Harmony to the word you chose. Resize the text and center if needed.
In the blank side, add a photo. Make sure the image is inverted since we will be painting the wood black.
Using a large brush, paint the wood black. I can fit 3 of these boxes on a 12X12 inch piece of basswood with the proper arrangement. Let dry for a few hours.
Adjust the settings. I am using the air assist with the honeycomb on in place of the baseplate. These settings worked perfectly for me.
Start by assembling the box top. Using the top piece, push one piece with the name on it into the grooves. Complete until the entire box top is assembled. Note that there two different piece types. One has a nub on the right and left side of it and the other has the hole to accept the nub. These will be alternating pieces.
To assemble the box, start with the bottom facing down (so the black paint is on bottom). Add the photo side piece to one side of the bottom placing the nubs on the bottom piece into the slots at the bottom of the side piece. Find a side that fits into the photo piece and attach that. Continue attaching until all pieces are connected and tight.
TaDa - Your box is complete.
I chose to use my MyIntent makers kit to do this. You can probably use the machine to engrave, but I haven't tested that. I chose two symbols that represent Harmony to me and stamped them along with the word in the middle. I placed the necklace into the box and the hand written inspiration on top of it. Then I placed the top on and wrapped. I also used my project on here for creating a reindeer to create name tags for the gifts. I thought it was a cute touch.
