Instructions for Making Wooden Plant Stakes Using an XTOOL Laser Cutter

Materials Needed:

  • XTOOL Laser Cutting Machine (e.g., XTOOL P2)
  • 3mm Plywood (high-quality, laser-compatible)
  • XCS Cutting File (pre-designed file with plant stake engravings)
  • Painter’s Tape or Honeycomb Bed (to minimise burn marks)
  • Wood Finish (Optional) (e.g., linseed oil, clear sealant for durability)

Step-by-Step Process:

1. Prepare Your Design File

  • Open XTOOL Creative Space (XCS) software.
  • Load the plant stake design file into the workspace.
  • Adjust the size if needed, but ensure it fits within your plywood sheet dimensions.
  • Set engraving and cutting areas properly within the design.

2. Prepare the Plywood

  • Place the 3mm plywood sheet onto the laser bed.
  • Secure it using magnets, clamps, or painter’s tape to prevent shifting.
  • If using a honeycomb bed, ensure it's properly aligned.

3. Configure Laser Settings

  • For Engraving (Text & Graphics):
    • Power: 50%
    • Speed: 350mm/s
    • Passes: 1
  • For Scoring (Graphics):
    • Power: 61%
    • Speed: 160mm/s
    • Passes: 1
  • For Cutting (Outline of Stakes):
    • Power: 100%
    • Speed: 25mm/s
    • Passes: 1 (adjust based on your plywood quality)
  • Ensure the air assist is turned on (if available) to reduce scorching.

4. Focus and Test the Laser

  • Use the XTOOL focus gauge to set the correct laser height.
  • Perform a test run on a scrap piece of plywood to confirm settings.

5. Start the Engraving and Cutting Process

  • Click "Start" in XCS to begin engraving the text.
  • After engraving is complete, the laser will proceed with scoring then cutting the stake shapes.
  • Monitor the process for safety and ensure clean cuts.

6. Remove and Clean the Stakes

  • Carefully remove the finished stakes from the laser bed.
  • Lightly sand edges with fine-grit sandpaper to smooth rough spots.
  • Wipe off residue with a damp cloth.

7. Optional: Seal or Finish

  • Apply a thin layer of wood sealant, linseed oil, or clear lacquer for added durability.
  • Let them dry completely before use.

8. Insert into Plants & Enjoy!

  • Place the finished plant stakes into potted plants or garden beds.
  • Gift them to fellow plant lovers or sell them as handmade products!
