      How to adjust slots for different thickness of wood

I got the file from Etsy. They have many different kinds for different types of liquor.

Problem is most files are designed for 3mm or some other whole number but real plywood is never a whole number like that.

This how to shows you how to change the thickness to match the material you have. Try to use a caliper it makes a huge difference.

Step1: Open the file in Inkscape and break it apart

You need to break the object apart and then break the path.

  1. Click on the path menu and select Break Apart
  2. Click on the node tool (the one to right of the arrow)
  3. Select the point where the rectangular slot meets the half circle
  4. Click on Break Path At Selected Nodes Button on the top menu (2 icons below Object)
  5. Repeat for the other point.

Step2: Resize the Slot

To Resize

  1. Select the rectangular slot
  2. Click on the Object Menu and select Transform
  3. In the transform window select Scale
  4. Change the width to the thickness of your material
  5. Click Apply

Step3: For rectangular slots at an angle

This one is a little harder

  1. Break it apart
  2. Ungroup if you have to
  3. Break path at the node same as step 1

Step4: Make a copy of the shape and Rotate

Make a copy of the slot and straighten it

  1. Select the rectangular slot and make a copy (CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V)
  2. Click the Arrow in the tool bar and then click the copied rectangular slot
  3. Click it again to get the rotate handles
  4. Rotate it until it is vertical

Step5: Resize

Follow the same procedure as step 2

Step6: Rotate back and Drag to original location

Rotate it back and drag it back to its original location using the original image to line it up.

Your rectangular slot will either be bigger or smaller than the original. 

Once you are happy with the location, click on the original then hit the delete key on your keyboard.

Reconnect the points by clicking on the node tool, click on the node and drag to connect to your new rectangular slot.

Step7: Laser Cut

Layer 1 is set to cut:  100 power 5mm/s

 

Layer 2 (holly image top left corner) is set to score:  70 power 150mm/s
