I love the look of topography maps and had a new lake come up nearby my place, so I decided to create a map to visualize the lake. It turned out it be a beautiful piece of decor that would fit in anyone's home The size of this map is 11.75" X 9"
Firstly, cut all the 9 canvases with the corresponding thickness of Basswood.
As you cut them, be careful to not lose the small pieces that you will need to glue later inside the map. It's also not a bad idea to mark the layers from 1 - 8 on the back of each layer.
Pieces each canvas will give that you need to keep:
Now you should have all the parts needed to complete this map.
Next, paint the sheets before you glue them together. I painted the sheets with different shades of blue, but you can paint them with one solid color if you don't have different shades at your disposal.
Also paint the four trim pieces on both sides and the back of side “Layer8”. This you could paint some neutral color since it will be the visible part on the outside of the map.
You will not need to do anything with “Layer1” in this step.
Once you've painted the sheets and made sure their completely dry you can use Wood Glue to glue the pieces together.
I recommend glueing the biggest 8 pieces together first, then glueing the small detail pieces inside. If you don't remember where the small pieces go, just go back and look at the canvases in “Xtool Creative Space” and use that as a reference. Then again, you don't have to use the small pieces if it's too big of a hassle, but it looks better if you do.
Also, I would glue the compass on last because you may need to put a weight on top of the map to hold the pieces in place if the sheets aren't perfectly flat.
All that you have left to do now is glue the Trim pieces to the sides. I used hot glue for this just because its quicker, but wood Glue would be the better option since its stronger.
I 3D printed me an easel to display it, but screwing on a hanging system to the back of the map would be an excellent alternative.
There were some things in the video that I did not include in the instructions, like the glowing paint and filling the map with epoxy resin. That is still definitely possible to do with this map and if you want to do that you can. If you have any question about that, comment them and I'll see if I can help.
