Capture the iconic London skyline, complete with Tower Bridge and Big Ben, in this stunning layered wooden ornament! This DIY project uses laser cutting and a unique rotating design to create a dynamic sky that shifts from day to night, bringing a touch of London magic to your home or gifting. Perfect for travel enthusiasts and craft lovers alike, this project combines intricate detail with a captivating interactive element.
Begin by opening xTool Creative Space. Within the software, adjust your project as needed: resize the design to your preferred dimensions and modify the engraving darkness to achieve your desired effect. This design utilizes two distinct processes: engraving to create the layered image and cutting to separate the four layers. The engraving is further divided into two passes: the first pass creates the initial depth and darker shades, while the second pass engraves again with lighter settings to refine details and manage depth.
These instructions are written assuming you are using an xTool D1 Pro 10W laser. If you are using a different laser model, you may need to adjust the settings (as configured in step one) to achieve optimal results for your machine. The laser cutting process for all four layers will take approximately 30 minutes. While the machine is running, you can use this time to gather your painting supplies for the next step.
Prepare your painting area and gather your spray paints. Recommended colors for the sky effect include: light blue (sky), black (night sky), white (stars/clouds), and orange (sunrise/sunset). To create the sky gradient, first mask off half of the engraved sky disk with a piece of paper. Spray the exposed half with black paint. Repeat this process on the other half using light blue paint. Next, use the orange spray paint, holding a piece of paper slightly above the surface as a loose mask, to lightly spray a band across the center for a sunrise/sunset effect. Continue layering colors – yellow, black, and light blue – as desired to build depth and achieve a sky base you are satisfied with. Finally, holding the white spray paint at a distance, lightly mist the entire sky area to create a speckled texture representing clouds and stars. Allow the paint to dry completely, ideally for around 24 hours or until it is no longer tacky to the touch, before proceeding.
Once the painted layers are fully dry, you are ready to assemble the ornament. Use super glue to adhere the wooden layers together. Pro Tip: Always place a piece of scrap paper underneath your project to protect your work surface from glue. Begin by carefully gluing the first and second layers together, aligning them precisely. After these two layers are joined, take the rotating disk layer and center it on the back of the combined first two layers. Apply a small drop of glue into the center hole and insert the small wooden circle (axle) into the hole. Important: Ensure you only glue the axle and not the rotating disk itself, so it can rotate freely for the day/night effect. Lastly, apply a drop of glue only to the exposed end of the small wooden axle and attach the back panel, completing the ornament assembly. Optional Ornament Finish: Thread a piece of string or ribbon through the designated hole at the top to hang your completed wooden ornament.
