Information
My husband and I married in 2004. We have a end table in the living room that we keep jar of nuts for snacking. I created a Ginger Jar design with our year of marriage to engrave on one of the jars for Valentines Day.

Step1: Preparing Your Materials

Prepare your materials.

  1. Wipe the glass jar with rubbing alcohol to remove debris
  2. Mix 3 parts acrylic paint with 1 part water in a small spray bottle and shake.
  3. Place the jar on its side and secure (I used my painters corners to keep it still)
  4. Spray the paint evenly over the exterior jar.  Using the spray bottle makes coating evening easier.
  5. Let Dry!  This will take the longest especially depending on your temperature and humidity levels.

**Bonus Tips

a. I usually use an old small box as a “shield” to keep paint spatter to a minimum.
b. Use the drying time to create designs :-)

Step2: Creating Your Design
Preview
  1. I wanted a ginger jar design with two birds and other design elements.  I used free picture down loads to get individual elements of design.
  2. I imported each design into Inkscape to create pictures into vectors.
  3. I aligned the individual elements (the jar outline, the bird which I duplicated and flipped horizontally), the flowers, hearts, and flourishes in a patterned that I was happy with.
  4. I then saved as an SVG in Inkscape and imported into XCS Creative Space.
  5. I made sure the design was united and together, then added the year.  I intentionally did not unit the year to the design so that you can customize the that with whatever you desire :-)
  6. I always measure the area of my glass and great box for the jar size and then a smaller square (set both to ignore) to work as a guide so the design is aligned.

Step3: Engraving!!!!!

I used my xTool S1 40 watt with the RA 2 Pro and accessories.  Set up is not hard, just tedious with multiple steps.

  1. Make sure all tools / accessories are plugged up properly.
  2. Measure the glass diameter.
  3. In Creative Space, set processing mode to “Chuck - Use Rotary Attachment" and enter the diameter (in my case it was 2.5)
  4. Install the jar into the stepwise clamp attachments (may different on the type of jar you use).
  5. Use the level and the virticle adjustment to ensure the jar is level.
  6. Place the Laser Guide on the rotary tool and mark the center of the glass.  Look at your screen in Creative Space to ensure the green line shows up on the screen as this is now our veritical alignment.
  7. Now to measure the distance, I always put a scrap piece of 1/8in wood on top of glass to ensure the frosted look.
  8. Place your laser target crosshairs in the center of the glass.
  9. Move the engraving to align centered with the crosshairs (resize as needed and use the ‘ignored’ boxes to help align).
  10. Do a final check of settings and start processing

Step4: Finishing Step
Preview
  1. Once the engraving is completed, let the glass come to room temperature (depending on the size, the glass could be a little warm so letting it come to room temperature reduces the risk of cracking).
  2. Rinse the acrylic paint off.  Basic water will do the trick!
  3. Let dry or pat dry.  If you have smudges, use glass cleaner or rubbing alcohol to clear.
  4. Now you have a customized glass jar!
