Step1: Gather Materials

1. Wood Material:

3mm Maple Plywood (12” x 20”) – ideal for the frame structure and overlay elements.

2. Finishing Supplies:

Paint or Stain – to add color or enhance the natural wood grain.

Water-Based Polyurethane – for a protective, smooth finish.

3. Adhesives and Tools:

Glue – for assembling the box components securely.

Clamps – to hold pieces in place while the glue dries.

4. Additional Supplies:

Painter’s Tape – for masking areas during staining or painting to maintain clean edges.

 

With all materials ready, you’re prepared to begin cutting the components for your heart-shaped box.

1. Prepare the Laser Cutter:

Load the 3mm Maple Plywood into your laser cutter.

Open the design file in Creative Space Software and ensure the layout fits within the material boundaries.

Secure the plywood to the laser bed to prevent movement during cutting.

Adjust the laser focus height and define the cutting boundaries according to your material and machine specifications.

Double-check settings to ensure clean cuts without scorching.

3. Run the File:

Begin the cutting process. The file should take approximately 8 minutes to complete.

Monitor the process to ensure accuracy.

4. Carefully Remove Pieces:

Gently remove the cut pieces from the laser bed to avoid breaking or damaging delicate parts, especially the overlay elements.

5. Organize the Components:

Lay the pieces on your tabletop and organize them.

 

With all pieces organized, you’re ready to move on to assembling the frame.

Apply a small amount of wood glue to hold the pieces securely in together.

Allow the glue to dry fully before proceeding.

1. Apply Water-Based Polyurethane:

Using a clean brush or cloth, apply a thin coat of water-based polyurethane to the entire project.

Be sure to cover all surfaces evenly.

Allow the first coat to dry completely according to the polyurethane manufacturer’s instructions.

2. Inspect and Add Additional Coats (Optional):

If desired, apply additional thin coats for enhanced protection and a smoother finish. Allow each coat to dry fully before applying the next.

3. Attach the Base:

Once the finish is dry, place the main part of the frame securely in the slot on the base.
