Step1: Gather Materials
1. Wood Material:
• 3mm Maple Plywood (12” x 20”) – ideal for the box structure and inlay design.
2. Finishing Supplies:
• Paint or Stain – to add color or enhance the natural wood grain.
• Water-Based Polyurethane – for a protective, smooth finish.
3. Adhesives and Tools:
• Glue – for assembling the box components securely.
• Clamps – to hold pieces in place while the glue dries.
4. Additional Supplies:
• Painter’s Tape – for masking areas during staining or painting to maintain clean edges.
With all materials ready, you’re prepared to begin cutting the components for your heart-shaped box.
Step2: Cut the Pieces of the Box
1. Prepare the Laser Cutter:
• Load the 3mm Maple Plywood into your laser cutter.
• Open the design file in Creative Space Software and ensure the layout fits within the material boundaries.
• Secure the plywood to the laser bed to prevent movement during cutting.
2. Set Cutting Parameters:
• Adjust the laser focus height and define the cutting boundaries according to your material and machine specifications.
• Double-check settings to ensure clean cuts without scorching.
3. Run the File:
• Begin the cutting process. The file should take approximately 7 minutes to complete.
• Monitor the process to ensure accuracy, particularly for the intricate Celtic Heart inlay on the top piece.
4. Carefully Remove Pieces:
• Gently remove the cut pieces from the laser bed to avoid breaking or damaging delicate parts, especially the Celtic Heart cutout pieces.
5. Organize the Components:
• Lay the pieces on your tabletop and organize them.
• Slats: Arrange the slats in numerical order (0 to 11) to match the engraved slat numbers on the bottom piece. This will simplify the assembly process.
With all pieces organized, you’re ready to move on to assembling the box.
Step3: Assemble the Box
1. Attach the Slats to the Bottom Piece:
• Begin by inserting the slats into the grooves on the bottom piece, ensuring that the numbers on the slats align correctly with the engraved numbers on the base.
• Once all slats are in place, check that they are securely positioned.
2. Attach the Top Piece:
• Place the top piece onto the tops of the slats.
• Carefully apply pressure to snap the pieces together, ensuring they align properly.
• Be gentle, as the top piece is delicate. Avoid applying too much force to prevent damage.
• If the fit is loose, apply a small amount of wood glue to hold the pieces securely in place. Allow the glue to dry fully before proceeding.
3. Assemble the Lid:
• Glue the Plain Lid to the Base Plate.
• Use the scoring marks on the Plain Lid as a guide to align it properly with the Base Plate.
• Apply a minimal amount of glue to avoid excess, and wipe away any glue that seeps out with a clean cloth.
4. Prepare and Attach the Celtic Heart Inlay:
• Paint or stain the Celtic Heart pieces individually. This allows for a clean, professional paint job.
• Allow the paint or stain to dry completely.
• Once dry, fit the Celtic Heart pieces onto the Plain Lid and secure them with glue. Be sure they are aligned neatly and press them gently into place.
With the assembly complete, the box is now ready for finishing touches.
Step4: Apply the Finish and Complete the Box
1. Apply Water-Based Polyurethane:
• Using a clean brush or cloth, apply a thin coat of water-based polyurethane to the entire project.
• Be sure to cover all surfaces evenly, including the Celtic Heart inlay, while avoiding excess finish buildup.
• Allow the first coat to dry completely according to the polyurethane manufacturer’s instructions.
2. Inspect and Add Additional Coats (Optional):
• If desired, apply additional thin coats for enhanced protection and a smoother finish. Allow each coat to dry fully before applying the next.
3. Assemble the Lid:
• Once the finish is dry, place the decorative lid securely on top of the heart-shaped box. The snug fit ensures a seamless and elegant final look.
