Instruction
1
Step1: Preparing Your Leather or Leatherette Patches

  • Purchase high-quality leather or leatherette patches. Ensure they are made of laserable material and avoid those containing plastic or PU due to the toxic fumes they may emit when engraved.

  • Pre-cut your patches to the desired size if necessary.
2
Step2: Setting Up Your Design

  • To import the "One Cat Short of Crazy" design from an XCS file, which includes both text and a simplified cat illustration suitable for laser engraving, make sure the design's complexity aligns with the dimensions of your patches and the specifications of your laser engraver.

  • Ensure your design is appropriately sized and formatted for the patches you are using.

Step3: Preparing the Patch for Laser Engraving
Preview

  • Apply blue painter's tape around the edges of the patch where threads are present. This tape serves dual purposes: it protects the threads from being singed by the laser and helps you align the design properly on the patch.

  • Position the patch in the laser, securing it in place with magnets to prevent movement during the engraving process.
4
Step4: Laser Settings and Engraving

  • Open XCS and import the design.

  • Adjust the laser settings for your specific project. For leather or leatherette, starting points might be around Power 20% and Speed 170mm/second, though this can vary widely based on your machine and material. Always refer to your machine's manual or guidelines for material-specific recommendations.

  • ALWAYS run a test engrave or material array test if possible on a scrap piece of the same material to ensure settings produce the desired effect.

  • Once satisfied, run the project on your actual patch. Monitor the laser process closely to quickly intervene if any issue arises.
5
Step5: Post-Engraving

  • Carefully remove the patch from the laser cutter once the engraving process is completed.

  • Peel off the blue painter’s tape from around the edges.

  • Clean up any residue lightly with a damp cloth if necessary, being careful not to damage the engraved design.
6
Step6: Applying Your Patch
Preview

  • Your patch can now be sewn or glued onto hats, clothing, journals, or any other item you wish to customize. If sewing, ensure your needle and thread are sturdy enough for leather. If using glue, choose a strong, fabric-compatible adhesive.

  • If using an iron make sure you iron from behind the application so that the patch does not change colors.
