The template gives you the option of a 1, 2 or 3 layered cross with the Verse John 3:16 on it. The 3rd layer is a white back with an illustration on it. This illustration can be modified if so desired. I have used Black & White MDF Board, but any 3mm timber or acrylic could be used.
You will only need to cut out the pieces required by your choice of 1, 2 or 3 layers.
I like to use canvases in XCS and in particular a blank work space when using multiple colours and when scoring onto wood. Simply copy the needed pieces to the blank Work canvas (4 in this project) and go from there. That way the original template stays unaltered. eg Cutting the White pieces first, delete when finished. Copy the black pieces next, delete when completed.
The P2 leaves quite a lot of charring when cutting, so I I set my timber in a fixed position on the slats (Usually pushed into the bottom right corner) and do my engraving first. I wipe down the timber and then cover the area to be cut with a masking sheet, push it back into the corner to be cut. This gives me the cleanest result. I haven't had much success SCORING through masking paper. You might be different.
If you are doing the 3 layered cross
Glue the black Middle layer to the back white layer. They are mirror opposite of each other so it should be obvious the faces that get the glue.
Now glue the Front Verse to the them lining up the bottom of each. Be careful to centre the words.
My Cross when glued fit very neatly into the base so I didn't have to use glue for this part. Yours might be different.
