Information

I turned a bitmap image of a dog into a vector using XCS trace image & layering by color function. Add your own dog's name to personalize this adorable ornament. Dakota was my dog, but he lives with my parents now.

  1. Open xTool Creative Space and open an image onto the canvas. I found a cute picture of a dog online and opened it into XCS.
  2. Click on the image and click Trace image on the right hand side.
  3. Click on the layering by color sliding bar to separate all the different pieces by color in your picture.
  4. Adjust the threshold, de-noising and smoothness bars until you get your desired vector outlines.

  1. Add your pet's name using the text box. I chose to engrave the name.
  2. I used the honeycomb, because there are some small pieces, and I want to keep them in an organized manner for easy assembly later.

Step3: Painting Time

  1. Carefully remove all the pieces, and keep them organize. It will make painting easier and also for assembly later.
  2. I stick tiny pieces on tape, so they won't move during painting.
  3. I used a make-up sponge and the dabbing method to paint every piece.

Step4: Glue and Assembly

  1. After everything is dry, glue the dog outline piece to the back piece.
  2. Now it's fun time! If you kept everything organized, this will be quick and easy. Match up each piece to the correct place in the outline and glue down. It's kind of like a puzzle, and I really enjoy it.
  3. I used glue in a tiny tipped bottle (usually used for quilling) to apply glue to the back of the pieces.
