Instruction
1
Step1: Create the Base and Hanger for the Ornament
Preview
Preview

Draw a 4” circle and assign it a RED layer color
Draw a 2.5” circle and assign it a YELLOW layer color
Use the ALIGN tool to center both horizontal and vertical.  Do not combine.

Draw a 1” circle and a 0.5” circle, ALIGN both horizontal and vertical.

Select both circles and from the COMBINE menu choose “Subtract at Overlap”.  Assign a RED layer.

Align the hanger to the top of the ornament and overlap.  Use the picture as a reference.

Select all the items and from the ALIGN menu center both horizontal and vertical.  Do not COMBINE these elements at this stage.

Step2: Create the Bone Shape

Select the heart shape from the SHAPES menu, leave it at the default size. Rotate is 45 degrees to the left and place on the ornament as shown in photo.

Copy and paste the heart.  Use the REFLECT tool to flip it horizontal and place on the opposite side of the ornament as shown in the photo.

Draw a rectangle between the two hearts.  On the toolbar “unlock” the Size and enter W: 2.25” and H: 0.75” then click “lock”

Select both the hearts and from the Align menu center them vertically only.  With the hearts still selected right click with your mouse and select “Group.”

Select the hearts and the rectangle and choose horizontal and vertical align center from the Align menu. With the items still selected choose Unite from the Combine menu.  Assign a RED layer color.

Move the bone downwards, it should still overlap the 4” circle, use the photo as a reference. Once you are happy with the placement select all the pieces of the design and from the Align menu select Horizontal align center.

3
Step3: Create the Offset for Scoring
Preview
Preview

Select the bone and from the Outline menu type in an offset of 0.123 and click OK.  The layer color should be RED.

Now select only the inner part of the bone and change the layer color to BLUE.

You will do the same thing to the inner circle.  Click the YELLOW layer to select it and apply an offset of 0.123 and click OK.

Click on the outer offset and assign it a BLUE layer.  The inner circle will remain YELLOW.

4
Step4: Create the Back of the Ornament
Preview

Now it’s time to make the back for the ornament. Click on the RED layer and that will select everything red. From the Combine menu choose “unite”

Do a copy/paste of the red layer and move it off to the side. This will be the back of the ornament.

5
Step5: Complete the Front of the Ornament
Preview

Now let’s finish the front of the ornament.

With your mouse Select the RED layer and the inner YELLOW layer of the front only.  Select “Unite at overlap” from the COMBINE menu.  This will remove the YELLOW circle creating the space in the center of the ornament for the photo to show through.

Change this to a RED Layer.  You should now have only a RED layer and a BLUE layer for the front of the ornament.

Step6: Create the Spacer
Preview
Preview

To create the spacer for the ornament you will need to make a copy of the ornament front. Do a copy/paste and move the copy off to the side.

Draw a rectangle over the copy you just created. This rectangle should cover the top of the ornament and a little bit past what would be the center line or widest part of the inner circle. This is important as if it’s not far enough down the picture will not fit.

Select both pieces then from the COMBINE menu choose “subtract”  The spacer will look like the one in the photo.

Step7: Add Curved Text
Preview

Select the Text tool and type in the sentiment:

“YOUR PAW PRINTS ARE FOREVER ON OUR HEARTS"

I used a font called “Combo” and changed the font size to 22 so it was easier to work with.  You will have to play around with this depending on the font that you choose.

Change the layer color to PURPLE and select “Engrave” from the parameters menu

To curve the text click and hold the icon and move your mouse down to position in place.

Step8: Add Cut Out Hearts
Preview
Preview

To create the heart cut outs select the heart from the Shapes menu. Rotate it 45 degrees to the left and change the height to 0.5”.  Place as shown in this picture.  Change to layer color RED.

From the OUTLINE menu choose offset and leave it at the default settings.  Click OK to confirm.  The inner heart should be a RED layer and the outer heart should be a BLUE layer.

Do a copy/paste of the first heart and outline and use the REFLECT tool to flip it horizontal and place it as shown in this photo. Next select both the hearts and outlines and to a center vertical, to line them up.

Use the text tool to add the name of your pet to the center of the bone.  I used a font called “Caveat”

Step9: Parameters for Cutting, Scorning and Engraving
Preview

I’ll be using 3mm basswood for the front and back of the ornament and 2mm basswood for the spacer.  The settings will be the same for all the pieces.  If you don't have 2mm basswood just use 3mm.

RED (cut) layer – Power 100% - Speed 5 – Pass 1

BLUE (score) layer – Power 50% - Speed 60 – Pass 1

PURPLE (engrave) layer – Power 80% - Speed 200 – Pass 1 – 100 Lines per cm

One you have cut all the pieces keep the center from the front as you will use this as a template to cut out the photo.

Paint the hearts, I chose a pink acrylic craft paint for this.  Set aside and let dry.

Next cut the photo out.

Apply wood glue to the back of the spacer and attached it to the back piece of the ornament,

Apply wood glue to the front of the spacer and apply the front piece of the ornament to it.

Use clamps to secure all the pieces.

Once dry add your embellishments, and insert the photo.
