These layered ornaments are made out of 3mm plywood. They come in either a retro Vegas sign shape or a funky retro rectangle. The phrases in the middle can be swapped around, or you can customize your own phrase. The wood has been sublimated & prepped with laminate to apply the pattern and get that glossy finish.
I begin by sublimating the print or pattern I want onto my plywood sheets. I do a laminate first and then use sublimation paper to transfer the print. That gives the glossy finish.
If you decided to sublimate, decide which elements you’d like on each pattern.
If you’re going to finish your layers after processing, then go ahead and align your design selections on your canvas and process.
If you didn’t use sublimation, then go ahead and finish, paint, color, etc. Your layers. I find it a lot easier to finish separate layers than to wait until they are combined.
Once you have everything how you’d like it, apply each layer to the back layer. For the Vegas sign, there is an engraved guide. For the rectangle there is a scored guide.
I used 2 part epoxy, but you can use an adhesive of your choice. If I were using painted or finished wood, I’d use a standard wood glue. Follow the instructions on your adhesive.
The hole on the top of the back layer is large enough to fit twine, many different types of string, ribbon, chording, or an ornament hook.
For mine, I used some metallic elastic chord and looped it through the hole & added some simple wooden beads for accent just because. You could totally add beads, charms, or nothing at all. It’s really your preference here.
