Step1: XMAS Shaker Ornament
Preview
First step was to select a design for the top. I really liked the JOY art with the manger in the O.
Next I added the heart to make the container to hold the shaky bits. Any fully enclosed heart should work pretty well. A hand-drawn one would look snappy and custom. You could even use a snow globe looking thingy, although that is already over used.
Then I added the year. Why not?! Commemorate Christmas in style.
Next I used outline to trace around the ornament. The basic ornament is done.
Copy the design to a new canvas and call it darkwood, or something.
Label the first canvas lightwood or something.
Use a good quality double sided adhesive like 3M 468 on the backside of a light colored piece of wood.
Cut this out. I used basswood, cause it's cheap, but birch looks spanky too. Make sure you use a kerf offset on this layer so you can get a nice fit.

Step2: Cut the dark parts...

Go to the walnut/darkwood/something canvas.
Use a good quality double sided adhesive like 3M 468 on the backside of a dark colored piece of wood.
Cut this out. I used walnut, cause I had it.

Step3: Cut the mittens...
Preview
Next I made some spiffy mitten looking things and added them to a new canvas.
To help keep things organized, name this canvas mittens or something.
The mittens must be small enough to fit inside the heart so you can shake it around and big enough to put names inside. Who is shaking these things really? Maybe the first time you see one or just before you put it on the tree. Put names inside the mittens. These are engraved. Kerf offset it not required.
We have a dog and a few cats. Find some outlines of whatever critters you have and add their names too. Sure why not - have you named your car, a scar or perhaps a pet name for you ileostomy? Find something to represent it and label that sucker too. There can be too much of a good thing though. Too many things inside that heart will keep the shaky bits from shaking, then why bother?
Adding tabs to the cut can make finding all the tiny bit easier and keep the laser from disfiguring them if they fall in the tray.

Step4: Cut the acrylic...
Preview
Next, copy the outline from the first or second canvas and place it on this canvas.
Label this canvas Acrylic or Bernie.
Cut these two pieces out. They are the front and back of the ornament.

Step5: Assembly begins...
Now for assembly.
Remove the baking from the dark colored base and carefully attach it to one of the pieces of acrylic. If you use 3M 468 double sided tape you will get just one shot at aligning the two parts and making them stick, so make it count.
Next take the light colored heart inset and use a permanent red marker and color the light wood surface so you have a nice pop of color on your ornament.
Remove the double sided tape backing and place the heart inside the heart already mounted on the acrylic.
Now the fiddly bit. Keep on removing double sided tape backing the place the items moving from the outside to the center of the O. This is very gratifying to see complete.
Now remove the backing from the number for the year and place them where they belong.
Remove the backing for the tiny piece inside the for and the O and pop those suckers into place.

Step6: Final assembly
Almost done.
Place the mittens, etc. word side up inside the red heart. You may need to sand the backside of those pieces a bit so that it shakes in a satisfactory manner.
Now for the finale. Apply a thin coat of adhesive to the top and bottom portion of the ornament and attach the top piece of acrylic to the base. Make sure you are using a clear adhesive that does not react to acrylic (ie E6000) and make sure you don't get adhesive on the shaky bits. Let it dry as per the instruction on your adhesive.
Tie a fancy red string or a string the color of your choosing and hang it on your Christmas tree! Don't forget to shake it first! Be sure to tell everyone who even comes in the same room as the tree, that you made the ornament yourself and give them a chance to shake it for themselves, otherwise, what's the point?
