Information
I started with a stainless steel cake server (ger: Tortenheber) purchased from Amazon and enhanced it with a personal touch using a diode laser engraver. The design features a beautiful floral pattern downloaded from Pixabay, meticulously engraved onto the server. I carefully adjusted the vector graphic parameters to achieve a unique effect: each section of the design—such as leaves and flower stems—displays a distinct color. This result was achieved through the laser-induced heating of the steel, which caused varying discoloration depending on the intensity and duration of the engraving process. The final product is both functional and artistic, blending durability with intricate detailing.

Step1: Simply locate and start engraving

The uploaded xcs files contains all laser engraving parameters and the design. So instrucions are easy:

  • It can be hard to place the cake server correctly on the laser engraving machine since the blue light laser outline for positioning is either the design with quite many shapes, or a rectanglular outline. That is why the xcs file contains an outline vector and the design vector. The outline vector is simply the shape of the cake server. The design is the floral design. You can disable the floar design and only activate the outline to see the blue laser positioning light when using the F1 Ultra.
  • After positioning, deactivate the outline vector and activate the design for engraving.
  • Enjoy the colorful pattern.

Details on how I made the design:

  • I started with a photo of the cake saver in XCS.
  • Created an outline and exported it to Inkscape.
  • I downloaded the floral pattern from https://pixabay.com/de/vectors/muster-hintergrund-nahtloses-muster-6471790/
  • I loaded the pattern and the outline in inkscape to clip the pattern to the cake saver shape. That shaped floral pattern was exportet to SVG.
  • I wrote a short python script that randomly assigns parameters for laser engraving to the individual shapes of the SVG file and writes the laser engraving project file.
