I had these cheapo knives lying around at the bottom of the drawer. As you can see the fancy blackaning layer (e.g. paint) was worn off, and they looked awful. So we haven't used them recently. I decided to save them by removing the old painted layer and engrave some damascus pattern on them. The settings could use some more tuning as the material proved to be inhomogenous, but they definitely look better than before, and I'm sure we'll use them for a good while.
For removing the paint layer I used the IR laser on the F1 Ultra. 100% power, 2000 mm/s speed, 100 lines/cm and 4 passes.
I created a polygon and used the manual vector editing tool to cover the blade area.
I downloaded a free damascus pattern bitmap, and traced it. Then I combined the result with the mask I used in the cleaning step.
For the engraving I used the IR laser again with the following settings: 100% power, 500 mm/s speed, 200 lines/cm, and 3 pass
