Tired of the tissue box outlasting the design printed on the box? Take tissue boxes to a new level with a decorative sleeve! This one is Christmas-themed, but you can easily change the designs in the sleeve to suit the needs of the holiday!
I used 3mm basswood (2 12"x12") and 3mm black walnut MDF (2 12"x12") for this project. You could use 1 piece of 12"x20" basswood for this rather than 2. You could also skip the MDF and just use two different color stains, but I had some of the MDF around and wanted to give it a try.
Get your stain (or stains) and some glue. I also used one of the tall boxes of tissue for this project.
If you have not already, download the file and open it up in XCS. There are 2 canvases, one with the inner box and another with a decorative cover. You do not need to use the decorative layer if you want just a plain old box.
Verify that the cut settings and change them to suit the needs of your laser if needed. Process the project it, start it, then hit the button.
Stain the pieces if you want to, then assemble it. Grab your box of tissue and give it a test fit. The dimensions of the tissue box I used was 5"x4.5"x4.25". There is a little wiggle room, but not much. If you use acrylic paint, the decorative box may not fit over the bottom box.
Next, put the decorative cover together. If you are not using veneered MDF, then stain or finish the box as you would like. The tolerance is fairly tight over the bottom cover, so avoid finishing the inside of the decorative box.
Add the tissue box and place! That's it, you're done!
You can create any number of decorative covers by modifying the designs in the cover layer. Just remember that the flat edge of the pieces are the bottom of the box, orientate the designs with this in mind.
