Step1: Prepare the tile

Before you do anything, place the tile in your laser bed and adjust the laser to the appropriate height.

Then move to your prep area.

Clean the tile with a light spray of isopropyl alcohol and wipe it completely dry.

In a clean spray bottle, combine about 3.5 oz of isopropyl alcohol and 2 tablespoons of powdered titanium dioxide (TiO2). Shake it like crazy until the TiO2 and the alcohol are thoroughly mixed and there are no lumps in the mixture.

Lightly spray from side to side on the cleaned tile. Let dry (it will dry quickly).

Then do a light spray from top to bottom. Let dry.

Spray a light third coat diagonally and let dry.

The tile is now prepared for etching.

Step2: Etch the tile

Carefully move the tile from the prep area back to the laser. Don't touch the surface of the tile or you will disturb the coating of TiO2.

With the tile positioned (don't forget that you have already set the laser height), align the tile properly.

In XCS, bring in your design, set power, speed, lcm, and anything else (I used P60 S40 LCM100).

Start your burn.

Do not use air assist! This will simply blow away the TiO2.

Step3: Clean-up

After you have done your etch, take your tile back to the prep area, and simply wash off the TiO2 coating with water. Once dried, it will look amazing! The clean-up is so easy, no acetone, paint thinner, or turpentine is required. No scrubbing. Just a gentle wash under the faucet.

Note: TiO2 is splashy when you wash it off, so be sure to rinse out the sink and wipe down your prep area afterwards.

Step4: Final thoughts

My project came out looking great, despite the fact that the TiO2 dried a bit unevenly. I'm going to investigate methods for getting the mixture onto the tile more evenly and see what I can find out.
