I stumbled across this picture on a random wiki, I think, and turns out that those kinds of pictures are REALLY nice for engraving with... Then painting the engraved pieces afterwards! Sharpies works too. If you engrave at lower speeds, you can start playing with how lights passes through the wood. Interesting things happens if you use paint when the wood is thin... Like stained glass art!
Engrave the image! Try out out different speeds for fun, between 80-120 mm/s seems to be ideal for my machine. Less than 80 just varporizes the wood completely. Higher than 120, barely anything is seen.
Wash it if you plan to paint it, else skip this and the next step.
Sharpies, waterpaint, oil paint, etc… Pretty much anything works amazingly on basswood!
I like to coat my engraved stuff with a coat of clear glue afterwards.
I use Amazon Basics All Purpose Washable School Clear Liquid Glue - Great for Making Slime, 1 Gallon Bottle.
Don't forget to drink water. And breath.
