Sand the cut out pieces on the faces that will be exposed to smooth them and remove char. Don't sand smooth the areas that will be glued together and if you are using pre-sanded material you may want to rough up the glue areas with coarse sandpaper because the glue may not get a good hold if you don't.

Line up the bottom and middle pieces so that the edges are flush on all sides and apply glue onto the bottom piece through the hole in the center (I used super glue). Then put the piece that was cut out of the center of the middle one in the hole that is in  the middle piece and hold it there until it is secure. Then apply glue to the small circle in the middle and then place the top piece on making sure to line it up with the bottom and middle pieces and hold until secure

Now you have the finished product. To bring it to the next level I applied a beeswax and mineral oil finish to the ornament.
