Step1: Inspiration and Design File

I googled what an autumn picnic basket should look like for inspiration. After looking at a couple cliparts, I used Inkscape to draw up my own version of this basket. I wanted to include leaves, because autumn (at least in California) has leaves falling down from the trees. I remember leaves falling down into my lunch box back when I was a kid, eating at a park under a tree. The only silly thing in my basket is a whole pumpkin, who would bring that to a picnic? =)

After I am happy with everything drawn in Inkscape, I save it as a plain SVG and will open it in XCS.

Step2: Laser Cut

  • Open the project file in XSC.
  • Set the black lines to cut.
  • Set the red lines to score.
  • I auto-measured the distance.
  • I have included the settings I used on the P2. This can be made on all lasers.
  • I cut a second basket for my daughter. She wanted to paint one too. (Picture 3)
  • This file is made for 3mm thickness material. You will need to adjust the slot for different wood thicknesses.

Step3: Paint

After all your pieces are cut out, it's time to paint.

  • I used acrylic paint and paint brushes for this project.
  • To achieve the 2 blended colors in the leaves, I dipped an angle brush in 2 different colors at each corner. I then followed/traced the edge of the leaves with my brush. (Picture 2)
  • Keep your paint brush wet when dipping it into paint, so that the paint doesn't cover the scored lines. You are basically making the paint less thick.

Step4: Assembly

  1. After painting, glue the two base pieces together. The slot is not centered, so match it up correctly before gluing it down.
  2. Insert the basket into the base, and you will be done!
