I used Inkscape to design my apple gift card holder. I am more familiar with it, and I design my files faster with it than with XSC.

  • I start by drawing an apple using the Bezier tool.
  • I measured a gift card and made a slot for the gift card to sit in.
  • I take advantage of the color-fill ability in Inkscape to see how my finished apple will look like with my desired color choices before I cut and paint it.
  • After I am happy with everything, I save it as a plain SVG and will open it in XCS.

Step2: Add Text to Apple

  • Open the project file in XSC.
  • Click Text to add a text box to XCS. (Picture 1)
  • In the text box, type a quote or name of your choice. I chose, “I couldn't have picked a better teacher.” This was made using several text boxes and center-aligning everything.
  • If you use a font that overlaps, remember to weld the letters together.
  • After you're done, center align the text to the front apple piece. (Picture 2)

Step3: Laser Cut

  • I masked my wood first before cutting and engraving.
  • The apple and apple front is made from 3mm basswood. The gift card slot is made from 1.5mm basswood.
  • Set the black lines to cut.
  • Set the red lines to score.
  • Set the green lines to engrave.
  • I auto-measured the distance.
  • I have included the settings I used on the P2. This can be made on all lasers.

  • Peel off the masking from the wood (if you used it).
  • I used duct tape to help peel off the tiny pieces. (Picture 2)

Step5: Paint

I used a wet baby wipe to help paint the apples. This gives the apple a stained wood look. I wrap a wet wipe around my finger, dip it in some paint and start rubbing it on the wood. You do not have to paint the gift card slot piece.
