My kid is starting school this week, so I made a last minute first day of school pennant flag.

I used Inkscape to design my pennant flag. I am more familiar with it, and I design my files faster with it than with XSC.

  • I start by drawing a long triangle and adding the stick to it.
  • I choose a font for the text and add stars and the apple to fill in the empty spaces.
  • I like to have scored lines for gluing placement.
  • I take advantage of the color-fill ability in Inkscape to see how my finished sign would look like with my desired color choices before I cut and paint it.
  • After I am happy with everything, I save it as a plain SVG and will open it in XCS.

Step2: Laser Cut

  • Open the project file in XSC.
  • Set the black lines to cut.
  • Set the red lines to score.
  • I auto-measured the distance.
  • I have included the settings I used on the P2. This can be made on all lasers.

After all your pieces are cut out, it's time to paint.

  • I stick down all my little pieces on tape, so they don't move during painting. (Picture 1) I group pieces with the same colors together.
  • I start off by painting the triangle part of the pennant white. I water down my white paint a little bit, to avoid brush strokes. (Picture 2)
  • Next, I paint all the little pieces. (Picture 3)

Step4: Glue

After everything dries, it's time to glue.

  • I use glue in a precision tip bottle for the small pieces.
  • I also use a tweezer to help place the pieces.
  • Use the scored lines as a guide line for glue and piece placement.

I cut some colorful ribbons to 12 inches long and tie it around the handle. I also added a bow to the front.

You are now done. I hope you enjoyed making this with me.
