Information

This is a picture frame for school pictures designed to be made on the P2.

Instruction

1

Step1: Gather Material

  • Wood
    • The overall project size is 11.5" tall x 17" wide.
      • For this project you will need (2) boards slightly larger than the dimension above so you can cut the final size on your laser.
      • The thickness of the wood is up to you.  I personally prefer the 1/4" Birch plywood.
  • Hardware
    • To hold the back plate on, I am using “metal picture turn button fasteners” (Amazon)
      • https://www.amazon.com/Pieces-Picture-Fasteners-Hardware-Backing/dp/B0B9BTZNDN?&linkCode=ll1&tag=amzmww-20&linkId=c5cd8c4145c53d4b529faf01951af24f&language=en_US&ref_=as_li_ss_tl
    • To hang the frame, I am using a “no nail sawtooth hanger” (Amazon)
      • https://www.amazon.com/Sawtooth-Picture-Hangers-No-Nail/dp/B0195H9G1W?&linkCode=ll1&tag=amzmww-20&linkId=9dc4dcfc03f9979390f4fe5cab149650&language=en_US&ref_=as_li_ss_tl
  • Glue
    • Any type of wood glue will work.  You can also use CA glue (super glue).

Step2: Familiarize Yourself with Project File

The XCS project file contains (3) tabs.

  • [ABOUT]
    • This is just some basic information about the project.
  • [Front Plate]
    • This is the front piece of the project.
    • Note that you have two options here.  You can engrave directly on the front piece or you can use the scrap that comes from cutting  #12 and make a name plaque to glue on later.  The added name plaque adds additional depth to your project.
  • [Back Plate]
    • This is the back piece of the project.
    • The resulting cut will be two separate pieces.
      • One piece will be glued to the back of the font piece.
      • One piece will be kept loose.
  • [Assembly]
    • This shows you how to put the project together.

Step3: Process Front Plate

  1. Set your first blank material in the P2.
  2. Select the [Front Plate] tab in XCS.
  3. Decide which option of Front Plate you want to use and move that object into the working area of XCS.
  4. Refresh the P2 to see your material in XCS.
  5. Using the cameras, line up your project to fit the material.
  6. Set the correct material thickness or use the XCS focus.
  7. Turn on the Output of the object(s) you want to process.
  8. Set your cut/engrave power/speed settings based on your material.
  9. Process the piece.
4

Step4: Process Back Plate

  1. Set your next blank material in the P2.
  2. Select the [Back Plate] tab in XCS.
  3. Refresh the P2 to see your material in XCS.
  4. Using the cameras, line up your project to fit the material.
  5. Set the correct material thickness or use the XCS focus.
  6. Turn on the Output of the object(s) you want to process.
  7. Set your cut/engrave power/speed settings based on your material.
  8. Process the piece.
5

Step5: Assembly

Assemble the pieces as instructed on the [Assembly] tab of the XCS project file using the pictures as a reference.

6

Step6: Add Final Touches

Once assembled you can leave the project as is or you can add your own touch to the piece.  Some options are:

  • Leave the finished product natural and protect it with a clear coat.
  • Stain the finished product, wait 24 hours (minimum), then protect it with a clear coat.
  • Paint the finished product
