I decided to make a small Earring Stand which included some black acrylic and a mix of colour with just the raw wood. You will see by the photo's that the glue isn't completely dry. I had a lot of changes whilst making this and many attempts to get it how I wanted it to look so if I upload any images throughout the instruction part of this, they may have some of the original images until I came up with the final part. I am uploading two files, one for the wood and another for the Acrylic. I have included that cat in the acrylic as well as I did originally want that but changed my mind. I will still make another one with the acrylic cat.
As you can see by the first 2 images above, this was my original design which when cut out wasn't quite right and would have made things difficult for someone to not ruin their hook style earrings.
Changes needed to be made which is also shown in the second image.
I decided on a different style of cat for the middle section as opposed to the cat photo originally used as when I engraved it onto the acrylic it didn’t stand out how I would have liked so downloaded the Maine Coon cat from Creative Fabrica.
I chose the frame from the shapes panel for the bottom stand pieces.
For the cat bowing down I wanted to add a paisley design and went into my paint shop pro to add it on and position how I wanted it and then erased the parts that were on the outside of the cat. I then made a separate layer mask with it so that I could add it into creative space. I also added in the original black cat, traced it and then put my paisley mask into the cat to the correct position, grouped it and resized to the size of the cat I was wanting to put onto the side parts of the stand.
I wanted part of the stand to have some of the cat bowing down that I had chosen so added it to the top part of the side pieces and united it to give the look I was after.
I started to size everything up to the sizes I wanted and gave the cut out part of the stand the size that was needed to put the acrylic part in (once again a lot of trial and error on that). I aligned to fit in the centre.
I positioned all of the earring holes and rectangles to to the positions you can see and then united them.
For the images for the Acrylic part which all came from Creative Fabrica, I aligned them to where I wanted them positioned and chose the settings I wanted for the engraving.
I have left all of these files including the acrylic part in the wooden part of the design as well just in case you would prefer to cut and engrave it all in wood.
The centre part which is the Acrylic area, it is longer than the wooden parts due to it being the part that goes into the cutout in the stand.
I wanted to add another dimension to this stand rather than just wood and thought the middle part of this would be nice in acrylic rather than wood and I also had the two cats in the acrylic, which does in fact look nice but thought I would change them to the plywood and not paint them but add a clear varnish to protect the wood and did the same with the top part of the base, at the end of it all I was really pleased with the outcome.
I changed the parametres for the cats as the original parametres weren't giving much substance to the final look of the engraving side of it, these parametres are perfect.
I set all of the parametres with some of my own changes more so because of how I wanted the engraving to turn out so that they are dark enough but not too dark to be able to paint with my water colour paints and they were just perfect!
I let the scoring for the smaller cats at the original settings and changed the cutting settings as well.
All of the parametres are included above for both acrylic and wood.
Once everything was cut out I proceeded to paint the wood, I used burnt umber with some black to make it darker so that it would match the acrylic a bit better. The Photo's look a lot lighter than the paint on it actually is (I just wanted to lighten the photo's so that the images look a little nicer).
I wanted to keep the cats and the top base plate natural and just use a clear varnish for those.
Once everything was dry, I proceeded to put it together. The wooden pieces I used tiger glue and the acrylic to wood I used 8000 glue.
As you can see from the photo's the glue isn't quite set yet as it takes 24 hours to set but I wanted to get this done ready for the 4th year competition.
Thank you for looking and hopefully you are happy enough with my creation to download.
Happy creating!
