This is a backlit wooden sign with multicolor hexpanel lights. The image is deeply burned into the wood to allow the light to shine through the remaining wooden layer. This took a few tries to get it just right, but it leaves a little less than 1mm of material left from the front panel, essentially paper thin. The LED lights move and change colour. The image was purchased off of a file sharing site, and the lights from Amazon. This was for personal use only, not for resale but just for me, a fan.
You will need to find the correct settings for what your product needs, but you want to burn away the top few laters of the wood and leave about 1mm of wood left.
I pre-painted the whole project prior to lasering away the darkened areas, and then did touch up afterwards.
This allows the light to shine through the wood almost as a light through paper. The hex panels are attached to the backside of the wood with simple glue. I added another thin panel of wood on the back to enclose everything.
Add the sign sides (I used a Star Wars font for this), and fill in any gaps with wood filler. Once dry, do a light sanding and finish off any touch up painting as required.
