Instruction
1
Step1: Before you begin

This project is on 2 canvases. One is the sides, top and bottom of the lantern and the other is the base. There are two colors: Red for cut and Yellow for score.

If using Acrylic, it is recommended that you use the Weldon 4 adhesive. Very little is needed and do be aware that it flows like water but dries very quickly. Be sure to run this adhesive from the top of a connection and let the liquid run down the joint. Put a cloth or paper towel underneath to catch any run off and allow the connected pieces to sit for a couple of minutes to set before handling.

If using wood, I recommend either 2p10 thick adhesive or loctite supergel superglue. Both have short dry times but do allow a bit of time for working with the material.

It is highly recommended that battery operated tea lights be used with this lantern. If using acrylic, you may be able to use real candles but be sure to remain with the lantern if you do. Real condles are NOT recommended if making this out of wood.

If using acrylic, to prevent hazing of your product, put liquid dish detergent over the surface. Once the cuts are complete, rinse the pieces thoroughly.

Step2: Cut your material

Run each canvas using the recommended settings for the material you are using (there is a birch cut and a transparent acrylic setting above) if using the P2. If using any other machine, use settings recommended or test by you for the materials you will be using. However, keep in mind that transparent material is cut with the P2 or other CO2 lasers and cannot be cut in most cases by other machines.

Once the pieces are cut, lay out your material. You should have 4 sides, a top (the piece with the square hole), a bottom (the piece with the circle cut out in the middle), a solid base with a scored circle, a base ring with a square in the center, and a cut out circle the same diameter of the scored circle in the solid base.

Step3: Assembling the base

Take the cut out circle and glue it to the solid base using the scored circle as a guide. Once that is done, glue the base ring on, being sure to line up the edges.

NOTE: If using a decorative transparent acrylic like what I used, you will have a shiny side and a dull side. The dull side should face the interior of the lantern.

First glue two sides together to create an L shape. Then glue the other two sides together. Once done and the glue has set, join the two L shaped pieces together.

HINT: If using wood for the lantern, put the glue along the tabs and then join your pieces together. If using Acrylic, first join the pieces together and then run a bead of Weldon 4 from the top of the interior of the joint and allow it to travel the joint to the bottom. Very little Weldon 4 is needed but make sure it covers the entire joint.

The next step is the bottom. First check the fit and be sure the dull side is facing into the lantern if using acrylic. Once the fit has been verified, then apply the adhesive for your material. If using Acrylic, run the Weldon 4 at the 4 corners on the exterior of the lantern, being careful it does not carry onto the sides.

The final step is the top. Just as with the bottom, check the fit and then apply your adhesive.

Step5: Putting the base to the Lantern

If the base is done correctly, then the top lantern part should slip right over the circle on the base and slide right into the cut out square on the base.

Get a battery operated tea light and place it on the raised circle on the base after powering it on and then slip the lantern on top.
