A 3d Ornament that is simple to make and sure to bring a smile to those that enjoy a play on the Naughty/Nice list of Santa Clause.
This file is set on 3 Canvases with 3 colors. There is a 4th canvas with an alternate center piece.
The band of the ornament has Green and Red lines which are both set to cut. The reason for this is that you will want the Green lines to cut first. To be sure of this, go to the lower left corner of XCS and select the “Layer and Object List". Move the green color dot to the top of that list. Then go to the right side of the screen under “Processing Path” and select “User Defining” then turn on the “By Layer” Option. This will ensure that the Green lines cut first followed by the Red Lines.
The other color you will find on Canvases 2 and 3 are Blue which is set to Engrave.
The settings in this tutorial are for the P2, but you can cut this on other machines, you just may need to adjust to your own settings for the material.
This ornament is 4 pieces. I do recommend painting both sides of your material prior to cutting/engraving. Be sure to mask so as to prevent overburn on your project. This is particularly important for the white center piece canvas (which also includes the band) as both sides are viewable.
As for painting, I used Pastel Pink for the Nice side and Marroon for the Naughtly side but feel free to use whatever colors suit you.
I did this on 3 separate boards, each painted a different color. In actuality, you can get all pieces out of one board if you don't paint them. The settings listed above for the cutting and engraving apply no matter if the material is painted or not.
Once done, and before removing the masking from the two engraved sides, check your lettering. If the lettering does not look dark enough, apply a light coat of black spray paint to darken it. Leaving the masking on will allow the paint to fill the lettering. Once dry, you can remove the masking.
I noted that the lettering did not show very well on the Marroon spray paint so I applied black paint before removing the masking.
Once you have all your pieces, you should have 4 total. Lay them out. You should have a band, a snowflake center piece with a hanging hole at the top, a side that says “Nice” and a side that “Naughty”.
Grab the flexible band and locate the larger rectangular hole in the center. Take the double sided center piece and insert hanger through that hole. Stretch the band to go over around the center piece, locking in a tab at each of the other three holes.
Once the band is locked on all tabs, you have the ends with a notch on one and protruding longer tab on the other end of the flexible outer band. Gently stretch your outer band and lock the two pieces together.
Place the first of the outer pieces into one side of the outer band, locking the tabs into the provided openings.
Flip your ornament over and do the same on the other side with the other outer piece.
For added security, you can put a drop of 2P10 Thick adhesive at each connection point. Be sure to wipe away any excess immediately to prevent unsightly glue “bumps”.
Use colors that are pleasing to you. The colors I used are a preference and not a mandated color scheme.
Be sure to wipe down your pieces before assembly to knock away any dust. Even with dry paint, dust and grime from cutting transfers easily but can be wiped away. Nothing is worse than seeing a dirt mark once your assembly of the ornament is complete and not being able to get to it without dismantling.
When removing the masking tape, I like to use duct tape to help get the mask off. It works most of the time and can help make it easier to get it off small areas. This is especially helpful on the band.
Included is a center piece without a snowflake on a 4th canvas. This is a solid piece and can be used to engrave a name or something else entirely should you desire. Be sure to swap out this piece with the snowflake piece on canvas one if you go this route.
