Step1: Collect Materials

You will need:

*Something to frame/preserve…I used a butterfly preserved in resin

*A photo box style frame. You can make one or the one I used is a 9x9" one from Ikea

*paper, cardboard, foam, felt, or whatever item that can make your layers. I used some of the paper matting often used for custom framing. Make sure the layers will stay in place and be creative with your layers.

*glue or some type of adhesive. A glue runner or glue dots are perfect.

*foam or other item as a spacer. You can use the pre-made adhesive foam for squares or a similar item. I used a glue runner and foam from unboxing something.

*lint free cloth

optional battery powered led lights…I happened to have some from the dollar store. They stay cool to the touch and are compact.

This design is laid out in separate layers to make it easy to cut. Choose your materials and cut each layer. Adjust setting to ensure there are not scorch marks or unwanted details in your final product.

First, clean the glass or surface of the frame.

I like to lay my frame face down on a lint-free cloth and assemble front to back.

Put the 1st layer down and add foam or other item as a spacer between each layer. Make sure to secure the spacer firmly in place. A glue runner or glue dots work best for me.

Continue to add each layer in order with spacers and secure lettering.

I secured my butterfly to layer 3 with thread so it looks like it is floating. By securing the object between layers 2 and 3, you get some space between the front and back of the frame.

Little led lights added to the front of layer 4 are easily hidden behind layer 3. I used a hot glue gun to secure the lights and folded the tab on layer 4 to hide the battery box. Line up the switch or button so you can control the lights later.

If you are using lights, the floating effect looks better in person. This would be amazing for some spooky decor that looks like you can reach in and touch it.

When all layers are together, gently secure the back in place and flip it over to check placement. If you want something adjusted…now is the time to do it before any adhesive fully sets.

Step4: Enjoy!

Whether this is for you or as a gift for someone else, enjoy your creation.
