Step1: Get measurements/cut

I had these two scrap pieces left over from another project. I wanted to use them but didn't know how. One day I put one on top of the other and it came to me. So I decided to measure these and got the measurements. My circle was 80mm and my rectangle was 300mm by 47mm. If you don't have some scrap you will probably have to cut these out. It was hard to cut this 6mm acrylic on the diode laser but we got it done. I used 90% power at 10mm/s and it took 2 passes.

Step2: Create the jig for aligning the Circle

Because of the alignment in XCS I find myself making simple jigs to get the framing/alignment right for irregular shapes. I just made an 80mm box with a cut layer and an 80mm circle with a score layer. This will allow me to line up the circle exactly in the corner. I just cut it from some scrap 3mm plywood.

Step3: Create your circle design and etch it.

Here I already had a circle logo. I just scaled it to 80mm. If you do not have one you can create one. It is very easy using XCS. I aligned it with my jig and burned it.

Step4: Create the area for the rectangle design

First step is to create an 80mm circle and a rectangle that is 300mm by 47mm. You will need to align them both horizontally and vertically on center. This will give you a work area for where to place your design. So I can visualize I do a cut on the rectangle to give me the design outline.

Step5: Create the design

To start out I made some simple rectangles. and formed like an opened ended box. Once I had those I used the unite feature to make them one continuous shape. To make it symmetrical I took the shape and copied it and mirrored it on the horizontal axis. This gave me the same shape on both sides. Then I took and copied the shape, shrunk it down and repeated the steps until I had 3 of them. This might be a simple design element but it is effective.

Step6: Burn the background.

Line up the piece with the corner and start the burn. It is important to point out that as long as you take the time to center everything, it will make everything look good. Aligning products is often the hard part of lasering products.

7
Step7: Assemble the design

This is where it all comes together. You will need to take your acrylic pieces and stick them together. I like super glue for this. First I scuff up both sides with sandpaper. this will help the acrylic stick to one another. Then stick them together until fully dry. Once dry you have your sign.  You can hang it anywhere. I chose to put it on my bench vise as it fit perfectly. You can replace the Circle with your own logo and go to town.
