Information
This was made for a friends mother who is 101 years old. Her daughter (my friend) recently passed. I asked her sister to find something that she had written to her mother. She sent me the note she found and the only portion that was not folded over is what was engraved on the glass. We feel she was talking to her mother through us. Needless to say this was the gift she could never have expected and cried when she saw it especially being in her own handwriting.

Mom, Have to go now. Love, Donna

I too cried the whole time I was putting this together. In Memory of my Friend Donna.

Preparing the images to engrave

  • First I took the picture I wanted to use and uploaded it to IMAG-R online to remove the background. (https://www.imag-r.com/)
  • After saving and downloading the image I then uploaded the new image with the background removed into Imag-R again to resize it and select the material.
  • I then went to Material and selected Norton and then Norton Glass. This will Invert the image to then be able to engrave on glass.
  • The next thing was to prepare the text that was in her handwriting to trace it in Lightburn to allow it to be engraved and place it on the workspace where you want it.
  • Import the image to Lightburn, click the image and right-click and select Trace Image.
  • This will then take the text from the image. It will be highlighted in purple. You can adjust the threshold to make it darker or lighter as needed.
  • Once you have it the way you want it, place it on the workspace. (I create a box the size of my glass to make sure all will fit correctly) Import the other image that you removed the background on to your workspace.
  • Remember since the image has been inverted, you will need to flip the message horizontally when placing it on the workspace to match the inverted image. (See picture above)
  • This trace image feature can be used on many different materials as well like cutting boards with grandmas recipes or personal gifts.

Preparing the Glass to engrave.

  • Clean the glass well with acetone (nail polish remover works well) or alcohol. Make sure to handle the glass by the sides after cleaning so you do not put any smudges on it.
  • You can use paint but I chose to use the black cardstock purchased from Michael's Crafts Store I purchased the 65 pound cardstock (see picture)
  • I used 2 sheets of the cardstock, placed the glass on top of it and started to process.
  • I used the Xtool D1 Pro 20 Watt at 7500 mm/min and at 75% power. I also tested on my 10 watt non prop and used 5000 mm/min and at 100% power.
  • This process can be done with all types of engraving be it art or messages or just making some sort of sign.

Thank you for taking the time to look at my very personal project and please reach out if you have any questions.

Thanks,

Janetta
