I had some transparent orange and yellow acrylic and wanted to make Something fun with it. I realized that they were the colors of the sun so I took that idea and went with it.
I had some extra yellow and orange acrylic which reminded me of sun colors so I decided to make a solar sun catcher. I drew it in procreate on my iPad using rotational symmetry to create a rotational pattern. I then imported it into adobe illustrator and image traced it so that it was vectors that could be cut out.
The first piece that I cut out was the wooden frame. This could also be done with black acrylic but I choose to use wood for a more rustic feel. I used a 12x12 piece of 1/8 in wood. I clamped it down on the honecomb with the magnetic clips, aligned the cut using the camera and then sent it to the machine for processing.
Next I cut out the yellow sections. I did not add any additional offset as the laser kerf was enough for it to fit together. I clamped the yellow acrylic down and lined up my design then I cut it. I chose to leave the film on so that the pieces would come out cleaner looking.
Then I repeated the previous step and cut out the orange sections.
Once all of the pieces were cut and peeled I laid them out and used tape to hold them in place. Once held in place I used superglue to attach the wood to the acrylic, and let it set. Once it set I peeled the tape.
It is now finished and you can put it in your favorite windowsill or hang it in the window.
