First ever tumbler! I'm sharing my experience and advice for those like me who are super reluctant to try this. First thing to note - My finished product here makes the volleyball look taller than it is wide. I will explain how this happened and how to make sure it comes out circular.
I used the rollers for this tumbler since the sides are straight. Roller position used was C since the tumbler was 76mm across. I have the riser enclosure so I lowered the my honeycomb to the bottom. Make sure that the roller (RA2) is sitting perfectly square inside your machine and that the red dot is at the highest point of your tumbler. Auto-measure to make sure that the distance is adequate. If you get an error when auto-measuring, you may need to adjust which level you use. After auto-measure is good, you can start lining up your tumbler. In Creative Space, make sure you select “rotary attachment” as well as “roller.” You don't need any additional measurements of the tumbler when you use the roller. Place your design so that the left side is right up to the green line. This is where your image will start. If you need to center your design with an existing logo on your tumbler, you may need to play around with it a bit. Use the framing feature to preview where your design will be placed on the tumbler. But remember!! You might need to adjust the framing power so that it doesn't mark your tumbler. You can adjust this by clicking the 3 lines in the framing box. I used power 2% and 160mm/s.
Instead of using preset settings, I went with 80/150/160. But it's important to note that different brand tumblers and even different colors will engrave differently. It's important to do tests when you can.
The image of the volleyball was exactly where I wanted it so I crossed my fingers and hit GO!
Now here is where I learned a valuable lesson…. A circular image engraved onto a curved surface will trick the eye. Even though it engraved correctly and I measured it after it was done, the round ball appears to be taller than it is wide. This is simply an illusion to the eye. After some research, I found that many people will distort the dimensions in Creative Space. You will want to add 10% to the width of a round object so that after complete, your eye will see it as a circle on a curved surface. The volleyball was originally 90mm x 90mm. I unlocked the dimensions and added 9 to the width. On the screen it looks odd, but after engraving it will look like a circle.
When the machine is done engraving, the image will look black on your tumbler. I used some dish soap and a plastic bristle brush for the first cleaning and followed that with a small amount of Barkeeper's Friend. The end result should be nice and shiny where the engraving removed the colored surface.
