Information
With the back-to-school season approaching, this project makes an excellent gift for your child's teacher. If you're a teacher with an xTool machine, this project offers a simple method to provide your students with unique name badges featuring their favorite characters.

1
Step1: Plan and Modify the Design

As I mentioned in the introduction, you may want to create these tags for your child's teacher and send them in as a gift.  If so, you may want to cut out a version that has no name engraved but include a few different characters.  Students could then pick out their favorite for their name tag.

If you are a teacher and have access to an xTool engraver, you could start by asking students what is their favorite animal, sport, or hobby.  You can then use the steps in this guide to create unique name tags for all the students in your class.

Step2: Build the tag

My first step is to start out with a rectangle for the base of the name tag.  You can use any shape, but a rectangle will give us the simplest workspace for the tag.  I then added in the monkey from the shapes that are built into the XCS software.

Step3: Add outline

Select the shape you added in, and use the outline tool to add an outline vector around the design.  This will be used to cut out around the design.  The spacing around is simply your preference, so use the slide to get the right spacing.

Step4: Resize

Next, select both the icon (monkey) and the outline.  Use the height property to set it to match the height of your rectangle.  In my example, I set it to 2 inches.

5
Step5: Merge

Next take the select monkey and outline and move them so that the icon and it's outline overlap the end of the rectangle.  Deselect everything and now just select the outline and the rectangle.  Use the combine tool to unite the two vectors.  This will make the outline and rectangle one continuous part.  The monkey will be engraved on top of this area.

6
Step6: Add text
Preview

Next, add in the text “name:” and optionally you can go ahead and add the student's name.  You can select all and use the array tool to easily duplicate the tag to cut out a batch of name tags at once.

7
Step7: Settings

The settings are for the D1 5W laser.  You may need to adjust the settings for your laser configuration.

Be sure to follow all the safety guidelines for your laser and always wear personal protective equipment when the laser is in operation.

8
Step8: Add Magnetic Tape

Finally, you may want to add magnetic tape to easily attach the name tag to the front of the student's desk.
