Information
This project involves creating a tool to ensure level engraving for pens or pencils. Called a pen or pencil jig, it is made from 1/8” black acrylic and can be easily disassembled for quick storage. Although designed to fit the dimensions of the xTool F1 laser, it can be used with any laser engraver.

Instruction
1
Step1: Selecting the Material
  1. Choose your material. Black acrylic is recommended, but any material that is 1/8” thick will work.
  2. If you cut the material using the xTool F1, be aware that the laser's angle may cause slight angles on the cuts.
  3. To ensure the sides measure 90 degrees, consider cutting the jig on a laser with a gantry, such as a D1, S1, or P2.

Step2: Setting Up the File and Material
Preview
  1. Load the file into your Creative Space software.
  2. Place the material on the laser bed and focus the laser.
  3. Use the framing tool to ensure the accuracy of your project cuts.
  4. Once everything is set up, use the programmed cut paths and engraving paths in the file.
  5. If your material is different from 1/8” acrylic, adjust your cut and engrave settings accordingly.

Step3: Assembling the Jig

  1. Remove the cut pieces from the laser.
  2. Glue the two rectangular pieces together, with the slotted piece on top of the piece without slots.
  3. Insert the side rails into the slots. Gluing the side rails is optional; leaving them unglued allows for easy disassembly and storage.
  4. One of the sides has markings to help determine the angle of the pen engraving. Note that the numbers are very small, but other markings may assist in aligning by eye. Feel free to create alternatives if the numbers are difficult to read.

Step4: Using the Jig
  1. Place a pen through the hole on one side and lay the rest of the pen in the grooved side.
  2. The jig will provide a level surface for engraving. However, if the pen has a taper, you may need to place something under the lower side to level the pen before engraving.
  3. If engraving more than one line of text, rotate the pen and use the markings on the side to help align it. Frame before engraving.
  4. With this jig, there is no need to secure the pen as it should rest without wobbling during the engraving process.

Enjoy your new pen or pencil jig!
