Information
Learn how to engrave a cutting board with this free design. You can easily engrave these cutting board from amazon with this design for a great selling product for craft shows. In this How-to I also give a few tips to improve the presentation of the cutting board.

Instruction
1
Step1: Determine the size of the workpiece

The first task is to determine the size and shape of the cutting board you are working with.  I have some small cutting boards that I found on amazon that have a working area of 5x7 inches, not counting the handle.

2
Step2: Replicate the work area

Next, I replicate the work area in the XCS software. To do this, I inserted a rectangle and set the dimensions to 5x7.  You may need to unlock the shape to adjust the H and W properties independently.

Step3: Add Image

Now we need to add in an image to engrave.  I like to use black and white images to maximize contrast.

4
Step4: Prepare The workpiece.

Before engraving, I used my router table to add a small chamfer around the edge of the cutting board.  This helps to give the board a more finished look.  It is also important to do this before engraving, because we have set up the design file to run over the edge of the board.  This will let the engraving run down the chamfer as well.

Step5: Settings

The settings are for the D1 5W laser.  You may need to adjust the settings for your laser configuration.

Be sure to follow all the safety guidelines for your laser and always wear personal protective equipment when the laser is in operation.

6
Step6: Remove alignment square

Lastly, we need to remove the alignment square from the project   I also use the bottom left corner of the workpiece to set the laser.  The top has teh handle, which makes it harder to get lined up.

7
Step7: Add Butcher block oil

I also like to rub down the cutting board with food grade butcher block oil.  This helps to make the wood grain pop and improves the contrast.
