Step1: Material and Sizing

First we need to select our material. This could be made out of basswood but I had some extra pieces of thin cork and I thought it looked kind of similar to a coir mat that I might have in a real house.

The thinner style seems more realistic, too.

Pick your sizing.  I decided on 60mm wide x 40mm tall to fit my house.  Create a rectangle in that size and round the corners to 3.

Step2: Choose Your Message

Just like a real doormat, you have SO many choices of what to put on here.  I included 3 in the file that can get you started:

  • Welcome
  • Go Away
  • Ring Bell pull weeds until someone answers (this is on my real doormat, too)

I picked a couple of fun fonts.  Something more scripty for the simple message and more playful for the weeds mat.

I also choose to add a thick line around the outside of the mat for extra decoration.  This is optional but can be done with the Outline and Subtract features.

Step3: Engrave and Cut

I used the Brown Kraft Paper settings to engrave and cut out my doormat.

Two doormats can be cut from a single cork scrap piece from a 4" coaster.

The cut didn't actually cut all the way through (it was close) but since this is so thin I didn't want to accidently burn it.  Rather than cut a second time I used a pair of scissors to finish it.

Since I used a coaster backing sheet it has adhesive on the back.  I stuck my two mats back to back but you could also leave them separate or stick it down to the wood of the house.
