Yes, YOU TOO can customized those "Novelty" lights from the dollar store. I'm not a big fan of "unicorns, butterflies and rainbows" so I wanted to add something a bit more tailored to MY mood. Just find a "stenciled" image to cut out and give it a go! NOTE: The file that I am sharing is only the basic pattern that will allow you to add your own images. Try it out and SHARE your projects!!
I'm sure if you've gone to a local dollar store that you've seen these “Novelty” lights. I was curious how they were constructed so I purchase a few and quickly disassembled them. They come apart to 5 pieces: Top and bottom rings, the light module/battery chamber, and the side and top panels (A thin acrylic sheet).
Carefully pull each piece apart. Usually they are held together by hot glue or flexible adhesive that can be easily pulled apart.
I was able to clean the small round top very easily. The rectangular side panel was much more difficult and once cleaned it left a lot of “scarring” that looks like scratches so I decided not to use it.
I measured each piece carefully and plotted the “image” area. (You can simply use the file I provided instead of measuring these pieces.)
I will assume you know how to add “stenciled” images into a paper project. Just remember, the “green” areas are your boundaries. You will add your images to the “red” areas. So, if you look at this image, nothing that you want cut out should be between the green and red lines. The images, text that you want to use should be within those boundaries.
Once you have everything cut, you can either use the “cleaned” acrylic or just use packing tape to give it some durability. I used packing tape (both sides) and just put it all back together.
It's very easy and you can adjust the sizes if necessary.
I would love to see other ideas using this project, please share your creativity!
Thanks for your time and I hope this gives you some inspiration to get creative!
