Work on your kids' memory skills with a matching game. Use images that will be special to them for even more fun.
I have included 10 images here for a basic set but this is a great opportunity for customizing.
Use their school spelling lists for the week to make word tokens and they won't even realize they are studying.
You could use pictures of the family or your pets, different types of their favorite animals, types of leaves with the names underneath, all bugs, the sky is the limit.
Whatever you decide, you will need 10 images in total.
I used some wood tokens that I purchased on Amazon but these can also be made from basswood.
If you choose to use basswood it can be even cheaper to make so if you decide to use their spelling words you can easily afford to make a new set each week. After your kids are done with them you could even donate them to the teacher for their next year's class.
Other advantages to using basswood is the backs will probably be a little more consistent in appearance and you can adjust the game to any size. Small hands might have trouble with the tiny tiles but you could make some large tiles for toddler play. Premade bulk coasters can also be used for a larger and thicker tile that's easy to grab.
Whichever base material you chose, we are ready to engrave our tiles.
Focus your laser and line up the images with your camera. I am reusing a jig from my F1 so I'm doing 5 at a time but you can do all 10 with the ultra pretty easily.
Engrave 2 copies of each token so you'll have something to match up with.
Small organza bags are just the right size to store 20 tokens for this game. You could also make a little box or use a ziplock bag for easy storage.
Start matching and enjoy the game. It's great practice to stretch memory muscles.
