Step1: Design

I made this design by copying from a photo of a real dog using simple shapes to make a simplified version of the dog’s markings.

I made the drawing in affinity designer then exported as an SVG file and opened in xTool Creative Space.

Step2: Cut

This file will need to be cut twice, once from birch plywood and once from walnut plywood.

If you don’t have these available the exact materials don’t matter, just make sure they are both the same thickness.

Step3: Assemble

Start by taking a full sheet of birch plywood to use as the base that all the parts will be glued to.

Then the rest of the assembly is like making a jigsaw puzzle. Combine the two different materials together to contrast each other and create the finished picture.

I also used a coloured wax on some parts to create a third colour and add more contrast.

Once assembled and the glue is dry you can add a coat of lacquer or varnish to give a more finished look to your work.
