This project was my first attempt to combining pieces together to create a sort of inlay. The same pattern is cut from two different types of wood (xTool Ebony MDF and xTool Basswood) with a backing board (xTool MDF).
In xTool Create Space, select all of the objects and set the output to OFF
Next, select the outside rectangle and set the output to ON
Adjust your laser settings to cut MDF
Cut the outside frame and set it aside
Cut another frame if you are planning to make two of these
Select all of the objects and set the output to ON
Adjust your laser settings to cut the darker material (xTool Ebony MDF)
Cut out all of the objects and set them aside. Be sure to include the insides of the letters.
Select all of the objects and set the output to ON
Adjust your laser settings to cut the light material (xTool Basswood)
Cut out all of the objects and set them aside. Be sure to include the insides of the letters.
Put down a layer of wood glue on the MDF backing board
Place the larger (sign) portion of the cutoff on the glue making sure to align the edges
Place the objects from the opposite color of wood (dark sign gets the lighter objects and the lighter sign gets the dark objects) into the sign and press them in to make sure they contact the glue.
Repeat the process for the other sign.
I used a piece of burlap to rub the service to remove the fibers that stand up and then sprayed 3 coats of lacquer with the burlap rub down in between (not on the last layer though).
