Whiskey Gift Box - Slide Lid with Inlay

Cut all the pieces - I set mine up as different canvases for different colours of timber.

To make the inlay, put some masking tape across the back of the cutout area. Apply glue to each inlay piece, one piece at a time, and ensure they are securely in place. Leave the masking tape on long enough for glue to dry. Give everything a good sand once done. On my box, the tab to pull the lid out goes on the right but you can alter your inlay or top design how you wish if you the opening to be on a different side. Just turn the design around to suit.

Glue the long sides to the back piece, then add in the outer piece of the top/bottom of the box (the shorter pieces). You will now have the lower part of the box completed.

Glue the inner pieces of the short ends in place - these will be what the lid rests on so they are shorter than the outer pieces.

Finally glue the thin edging piece to the top of the assembled box. This is what finishes the top edge nicely and holds the slide lid in. Make sure the glue has dried completely before sliding the lid in or else the lid will stick inside the box and it will be a pain to try to remove (not speaking from experience or anything!)

I then gave everything a coat of Bondall Liquid Wax (food-safe) to protect and darken the timber a bit. A little bit goes a long way and it's very oily so use a soft cloth to wipe into the timber.
