Information

Bring sacred art to life using depth mapping and precision laser engraving. In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to transform a 2D image into a stunning 3D relief engraved wooden coaster using a diode laser.

This project combines digital depth mapping, relief carving, and controlled burn techniques to create a premium handcrafted finish.

✨ Why This Project Stands Out

🔸 Converts flat artwork into 3D sculpted relief
🔸 Professional depth-map engraving workflow
🔸 Perfect for gifting, décor, or premium product lines
🔸 Works beautifully on basswood
🔸 High perceived value with minimal material cost

This is not a simple surface engraving — this is layered depth carving.

🛠 Materials Used

🔸 3mm – 6mm Basswood
🔸 Diode Laser (I used xTool M1 Ultra)
🔸 Depth Map Image (grayscale)
🔸 Light sanding paper (320–400 grit)
🔸 Optional: Wood oil or clear varnish

Instruction

1

Step1: Prepare the Artwork

1️⃣ Start with a high-resolution image.
2️⃣ Convert the image into a grayscale depth map.

  • White = highest point
  • Black = deepest cut
  • Mid-tones = layered relief

Important: Smooth gradients create smooth relief transitions.

2

Step2: Depth Mapping Strategy

Instead of simple line engraving, we use:

✔ Power variation
✔ Speed variation
✔ Multi-pass engraving
✔ High DPI for smooth surface blending

This creates a sculpted 3D appearance rather than flat shading.

3

Step3: Laser Settings (Example Starting Point)

These will vary depending on wood density and machine calibration.

For Basswood (Relief Mode):

• Power: 60–100%
• Speed: 100–400 mm/s
• Passes: 1–3 depending on depth
• DPI: 300+

Tip: Always test on scrap wood first.

4

Step4: Engraving Process

1️⃣ Secure the wood flat.
2️⃣ Import grayscale depth map.
3️⃣ Set engraving mode to grayscale or relief.
4️⃣ Run a small test section first.
5️⃣ Proceed with full engraving.

You’ll notice gradual layering forming the sculpted effect.

5

Step5: Finishing Touch

After engraving:

✔ Lightly sand surface to smooth micro-burn fibers
✔ Remove dust with soft brush
✔ Apply light wood oil for warm tone
✔ Optional: Clear matte varnish

This enhances contrast and highlights depth.
