Information

Laser cut wooden fidget spinner coaster. You need to ensure the central plate (the black gear in my case) is slightly larger than the top and bottom, so there's enough space for your hands to spin it.

Intro

The file cuts a few shapes:

  • Bottom: the flat section with two scored circles that help with decoration and building.
  • Middle: the gear-shaped section that will spin.
  • Top: a section shaped like the bottom, with cuts that create the optical illusion.
  • Five small circles: these are used to support the top section and ensure the gear spins. There'll be a sixth small circle from the middle of the gear, as a spare!

Steps

  1. Once all pieces are cut, paint them however you prefer. I used one coat of acrylic paint on each and one coat of modge podge for sealing, since this will be used to hold (potentially) wet containers.
    1. The larger circle on the bottom section is for marking where you need to paint if you're looking to make the centre colourful.
    2. When painting the middle gear, use the side that makes it run opposite to the direction of the top section, so that it gives you a more interesting effect! You can test putting them together before painting, and see which way you prefer.
    3. Do not paint the underside of the middle gear, as it won't be seen and might cause extra friction.

Note: if the gear is not spinning, use a small piece of sandpaper to sand the inside of the gear's central hole. I used P180, but could probably do with finer.

Once all pieces are prepared and dried properly (might take a couple of hours), glue the small circles in the centre (to match the central scored circle) and in each corner of the bottom section. I used silicone glue. Wipe any excess glue and wait for it to dry.

Once the glue is proper dry (around 20/30 minutes), place the gear and apply a dot of glue to the top of each small circle. Don't add too much to the central circle, or you might end up spreading it to the gear and preventing movement.

Leave it to dry for a few hours, then enjoy your fidget coaster!
